Designing Parallel Learning Systems

A bespoke Preparing for Adulthood framework designed to run alongside an existing commercial curriculum.

Challenge

Learners with very different abilities needed to work towards different qualifications — within one group, one timetable and one set of resources.

A parallel learning system: shared authentic activities, mapped to multiple qualification pathways, with differentiated evidence built in.

The Problem

A single class contained learners working towards different qualification pathways and with very different support needs. Running separate programmes would fragment shared experiences, increase teacher workload and isolate learners. The challenge was to design one learning system that allowed everyone to participate in the same authentic activities while generating evidence for different qualifications.

Context

Preparing for Adulthood was a whole-school priority for young people approaching adulthood. Alongside developing independence, learners also needed accredited outcomes that reflected very different levels of ability. Existing commercial resources worked well for some learners but excluded others, creating the need for an equivalent pathway.

Constraints

Inclusive Participation Every learner needed to take part in the same activities, regardless of ability or qualification pathway.

Multiple Qualification Pathways One programme had to generate evidence for different qualifications without creating separate schemes of work.

Authentic Learning Activities had to reflect real adult life rather than isolated classroom exercises.

Teacher Usability The framework had to reduce planning complexity, not add to it.

Design Strategy

I approached the project as a systems design challenge. Rather than creating separate schemes of work, I designed a parallel curriculum where every learner completed the same real-world activities while following an individual evidence pathway. Qualification mapping, differentiation and assessment were embedded into the system rather than added by teachers.

The Solution

A parallel learning system where one programme, one lesson and one shared experience supported multiple qualification pathways simultaneously. Differentiated workbooks, embedded evidence mapping and consistent activity design enabled learners to work together while producing qualification-specific outcomes.

Impact

Teachers delivered a single coherent programme instead of multiple parallel lessons. Learners participated together regardless of qualification pathway, while embedded evidence mapping reduced planning and assessment overhead. The framework remains in use and continues to support accreditation until qualification reform in 2027.

Looking Ahead

The project reinforced a design principle that has shaped my work since: differentiation belongs in the system, not the lesson. Investing time in curriculum architecture removed the need for constant adaptation during delivery, creating a framework that was both more inclusive and easier to sustain.
